The advent of the destruction of the Twin Towers, in New York city, shocked one of the world's superpowers. The sentiment that seemed to run through the minds of people all over the world was one of disbelief. No one believed that any group would dare to attack America, much less on their own soil. Because the guilty parties have yet to identify themselves, the "usual suspects" were named as possible perpetrators. The main group of suspects come from a group called the Al Quida. A specific member, Bin Ladin has been singled out as the main contributor. Bin Ladin has been invisible since the destruction of the Twin Towers. In searching for him, America has concentrated on people from the Middle East. Now that the government has named groups and countries that may be involved, the displaced anger has seemed to have fallen on people of Middle Eastern descent or individuals who are of the muslim faith. A rash of hate crimes against Middle Easterners and Muslims have been on the rise as a result of americans' fear of the unknown. My question will be, " Did the advent of the destruction, of the Twin Towers on 9-11, lead to an increase in hate crimes against Middle Easterners and Muslims?" I will be looking for correlation in data between the level of hate crimes prior to 9-11 and the level of hate crimes since. My dependent variable will be the level of hate crimes and my independent variable will be the destruction of the Twin Towers. I am going to measure the level of hate crimes before 9-11 and the level after 9-11.
